With this season’s flurry of festivals and events celebrated in and outside of school, including Halloween and TISB’s Economics and Business fest XAVAGE, we find ourselves coming closer to our family, friends and of course teachers. When you think of a teacher who sheds light and joy among their students, just like ‘Festival of Lights’ next week, it’s hard not to let the name Ms. Sumita Tambi in your mind. So, on the center stage this week is - Ms. Sumita!
Could you provide an overview of your journey at TISB, highlighting any significant milestones or experiences that have shaped your time at the school?
I have been with TISB for 5 years and have loved every role from an economics teacher to the HOD for Economics and Business and now the additional responsibility of being the MUN coordinator. I enjoy doing new things, and my ambition rarely keeps me in any role for too long.
Coming into the education field after 15 years in the corporate world is no easy feat, but Ms. Sumita says “I see it as a "second inning" - one that I am thoroughly enjoying. Something that started as a 5-year experiment seems to have transformed into my passion.”
Can you briefly explain your educational background and any specialized training or certifications that have influenced your teaching approach?
I am an economics graduate from Presidency College, Kolkata, and an MBA from IIM Lucknow. Post that, I worked in analytics In London and India, across domains and industries. I feel like my exposure to the corporate world helps me make discussions in the classroom more real and insightful.
When asked how to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that fosters student engagement and learning, Ms. Sumita replied-
My teaching philosophy is to "listen". I believe that all students want to do well. As facilitators, we need to listen, support, and empathise. I can be fairly strict with classroom expectations, but I am always listening and always available when my students need me.
The most rewarding time in school is when I am in the classroom with my students. I love talking to them about economics and about things unrelated to economics. We discuss TV serials, movie stars, books, music and just about anything that makes them smile. It's my secret recipe to a stress-free day!
