Ameya wins the 'Rotary Environment Award 2022

Ameya Sathya Kakade of Grade 12 was presented with the 'Rotary Environment Award 2022' in recognition for the various initiatives he did through his platform, SustainAbility.

SustainAbility is a platform aimed to spread awareness on sustainable living. He has actively collaborated with Rotary Bangalore for various initiatives, such as a talk on Bio-Medical Waste Disposal during the COVID pandemic, Tree Plantation Drive - an initiative to reduce the carbon footprint and promote afforestation, and a Plastic Collection Drive, among others.

"It all started when I collaborated with Rotary Bangalore and iLove to Care India to give a talk on Bio-Medical Waste Disposal during the pandemic, and SustainAbility has since grown to become an Instagram community with over 450 followers from around the world. Through my Instagram handle, I regularly upload posts related to small changes that we can practice at home to take a step to conserve our environment. I have also actively worked with NGOs and other Social Enterprises on various initiatives, where we have involved smaller communities in Bangalore to solve local problems such as plastic pollution"

Ameya also organised and coordinated the Pedal for Planet and Pedal for Health Cycling Event held in the month of July. The event aimed to spread awareness of the benefits of cycling and the need to adopt eco-friendly transport and attracted over 200 participants.

He recently held a plastic collection drive in his apartment with ReCharkha a social enterprise that upcycles used day-to-day plastic items into accessories such as bags and laptop covers. In July 2022, SustainAbility also worked with six Rotary Clubs in initiating a cycling event to spread awareness on the benefits of cycling, which gathered over 200 participants.

“I too wanted to make a change at an individual and community level by spreading awareness on sustainable

living, so that households can incorporate sustainable methods in their daily lives. I plan to continue spreading awareness and grow the platform further when I pursue my higher education in the university, as I feel that we need to take the first step in ensuring a greener and more sustainable future!”
